Norway Expedition 1940 13th DBLE Uniform and Equipment

Legionnaires being outfitted with new leather equipment, 1939-40

When the 13th DBLE was formed in February of 1940 at Sidi Bel Abbes, Algeria, it was originally intended to be posted in an expedition to Finland to resist the Soviet Union invasion. The subsequent victory of the USSR, prior to the deployment of the 13th saw the unit redirected to join the 1st French Light Division, under General Bethouart, as part of an effort to thwart German incursions into Norway. After being raised, the 13th was sent to Camp Larzac, in central France, for reffitting. Here The 13th was issued "Alpine" Mountain equipment and completely outfitted with the Model 1935/38 brown wool uniforms. Despite the scrapping of the ill-fated Finland intervention, the mountain equipment the 13th had was still put to good use with their redeployment to Norway.

Wool "Garrison" Pattern French Berets. French Mountain Troops traditionally wore large wool berets. As the 13th was designated as a "Mountain Unit", after a brief haphazard Mountain training period, the unit was issued with Berets. However, the 13th received the somewhat less exagerrated Beret of Garrison troops, which was of the same Brown Wool Material, as was worn by troops on the Maginot Line, rather than the normal French Mountain Alpine Troops Beret. The 13th DBLE was the first French Foreign Legion unit to be issued with Berets.

Equipment

Model 1936, MAS 36 Pouches, were officially issued to the 13th, though photographs of the time speak contrary to notions of their widespread use. Earlier WW1 style Model 1905/14 pouches were still the predominant in use by the 13th. The MAS 36 Pouches were of a two pocket configuration, and were of brown leather, with one pocket larger than the other, patterned individually for left and rightside wear. Later postwar M44 or M49 MAS pouches are of a much lighter khaki-green-yellow color, and of a two pouches of equal size format. The Model 1905/14 pouches were single pocket. All Models were worn in sets of three; two front, one back.
