Captain Charles (Karal) Hora of the 13th DBLE

Postwar Photo of Hora.

Born to a Japanese woman married to a Czech man, Charles or (Karal) was in the 2nd Co. 11th REI who joined in 1938 after Germany invaded Czecheslovkia. He managed to kill a German during the 'phony war' winter. When the 11th came in contact with the Germans in the Inor forest his Sgt had his knees shot out with MG fire and Hora fireman carried him to the rear. Hora sustained wounds in the hands (Two fingers lost), shot in the thigh and the foot. When the germans were going to overrun the hospital and the medical personel was being evacuated, he begged a nurse to switch his ID bracelet with someone else so he would not suffer reprisals for being Czech. The nurse got him a tag that said he was 'Carlos Fernandez'. While in captivity he escaped to Spain by going through the Pyrennes (sp?), was captured by Franco's forces, escaped by jumping from a moving train, and made his way to Britain and joined the Free French Forces as a para officer. He ended the war with a Legion d'Honneur, Croix de Guerre with 7 citations, A Croix de Guerre ETO with 5 citations, a Croix de Valeur with 2 citations, a US Silver Star, and British Military Cross. Apparently after the war was over he went back to Prague but left after the Russians put the pressure on. He went back to the Legion and served further. I think he was also in Indochina, Korea, back to Indochina, and Algeria. He authored at “Debout la Legion!” about the Legion and ended his career as a Major.
